Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State, in his manifesto document, promised to complete both the Onitsha Water Scheme and Otuocha Water Scheme within 12 months.  This promise was important because the Water Schemes were both initiated to provide access to clean and safe water for over 2.4 million people.

Method

We monitored the Water Schemes for any progress and after spending 10 months in office without taking any decisive action to keep to his promise, we launched an online petition on change.org and sent the Governor a letter to remind him of his promise.

We visited the facilities and spoke with the affected community members and continued our online campaign and sustained the pressure while our petition garnered over 2,000 signatures.

Result

Work has since commenced on the Water Schemes although the promise has been broken as the governor missed the set timeline.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo during his inauguration said "Over the next two years, we shall review, amend the relevant legislations, reform and strengthen the system for efficiency, restructure and strengthen the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission and conduct Local Government elections". He noted the importance of democratically and legitimately elected local government officers to the success of a democratic system.

Method

In April 2024, after marking his second year in office without any notable steps taken to fulfill this promise, we sent a letter reminding Governor Soludo of this promise. We followed this up with an online campaign and created an online petition to this effect.

Result

Although the promise had been broken because the timeline elapsed, Governor Soludo has restructured ANSIEC as he inaugurated the new members of the commission on August 6th. On the 12th of August, Anambra State Government announced the state would hold the local government elections on the 28th of September 2024.
