Background:

For years, residents of Akute, Ajuwon, and surrounding communities in Ifo Local Government of the Ogun Central Senatorial District of Ogun State have endured the hardship of navigating terrible road conditions. The Alagbole-Ayawoele-Ajuwon and Akute Roads, key routes connecting thousands of commuters to Lagos and other parts of Ogun State, had long been in disrepair, causing traffic congestion, economic losses, and safety concerns.

During a public address, Governor Dapo Abiodun made a clear promise to begin active construction on these roads within two to three weeks, following the completion of the Denro-Ishasi Road project. However, as the weeks passed, no visible action was taken, leaving residents frustrated at the possiblity of yet another unfilfilled promise.

Recognizing the need for citizen-led accountability, Advokc Foundation launched an advocacy campaign in July of 2024 titled #FixIfo#Roads under the Promise Ring Project, urging the governor to fulfill his promise.

Our Advocacy Approach

To push for action, we too the following steps:

1. Official Engagement: We sent a formal letter to the Governor’s office, reminding him of his promise and requesting immediate action on the road construction. This served as an official record of engagement and reinforced the need for accountability.

2. Media Advocacy: We issued a press release to amplify the demand, ensuring that both traditional and online media covered the issue. By putting the governor’s promise in the public domain, we increased pressure on the government to act.

3. Digital Campaign: One-Man Online Protest: We also launched an online advocacy movement. Through daily social media posts, engagement with key influencers, and public conversations, we consistently called out the delay and demanded that Governor Abiodun keep his word.

Impact: A Victory for Citizens’ Advocacy

On Day 9 of our online protest, the government responded. Heavy machinery was deployed to the Alagbole-Ajuwon Road, and active construction began, a result of persistent advocacy and civic engagement.

The successful completion of the Alagbole-Ajuwon and Akute Road project is a testament to the power of citizen advocacy and government accountability. Today, residents no longer struggle with the dust, potholes, and traffic congestion that once plagued the area. Instead, they enjoy smooth road access, improved transportation, and a more vibrant local economy.

Beyond convenience, the new road has sparked economic growth, with new businesses opening up along the route, increased commercial activity, and better property values. This success reinforces the impact of active civic engagement. When citizens hold leaders accountable, real change happens.

At Advokc Foundation, we celebrate this milestone, but our work does not end here.
