After an 11-year, Anambra State has successfully conducted local government elections across all 21 local government areas, marking a significant milestone in the state's democratic journey. This achievement aligns with Governor Chukwuma Soludo's promise to reinstating grassroots governance and enhancing democratic processes.

Upon his inauguration on March 17, 2022, Governor Soludo emphasized the importance of local governance in his address. In his words,"Over the next two years, we shall review, amend the relevant legislations, reform and strengthen the system for efficiency, restructure and strengthen the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), and conduct Local Government elections." This declaration underscored his administration's dedication to reinstating democratically elected local officials, essential for effective grassroots development.

By April 2024, two years after the promise was made, with no substantial progress toward the promised elections, Advokc commenced a campaign to remind the Governor of his promise. We started by sending a formal letter to Governor Soludo, reminding him of his promise. This initiative was bolstered by an online campaign and a widely signed petition on change.org, reflecting the public's desire for accountable local governance.

Responding to the mounting advocacy, Governor Soludo took decisive action by restructuring the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC). On August 6, 2024, he inaugurated new commission members.

Election Day: A Return to Grassroots Democracy

On September 28, 2024, Anambra State witnessed a peaceful and transparent electoral process across its 21 local government areas. The elections marked the end of over a decade without locally elected officials, restoring grassroots representation and accountability. The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) emerged victorious in all local government areas.
