The improvement of educational infrastructure has become a critical focus for many governments, including the government of Anambra state. H.E Professor Charles Soludo promised to upgrade infrastructure in government-owned schools to create conducive environments for learning. Urban Boys Secondary School Fegge was one of the beneficiaries of this promise, and during AdvoKC’s recent visit, we had the opportunity to assess the progress made in fulfilling the Governor's commitments.

Earlier this year, the Governor visited Urban Boys Secondary School Fegge and made three significant promises. Firstly, he promised to provide sports equipment to promote physical activities among the students. Secondly, he promised to supply the school with a new set of bands. However, the most noteworthy commitment was the Governor's promise to relocate the school to a more suitable environment for learning. The new location would provide ample space for sporting activities, allowing for the holistic development of the students.

On our visit to Urban Boys Secondary School Fegge, we had the opportunity to speak with the school's Principal, Mr Emmanuel Anierobi. He expressed his appreciation for the Governor's visit and for honouring his promises by providing footballs for sporting activities and a new set of drums for the school’s band.

One of the most crucial aspects of the Governor's promise was the relocation of the school to a more conducive environment. The principal informed us that work had already begun on the new site at "Ugbormili primary school 1". The plan was to utilise six buildings on the premises, with three allocated to the primary school and the remaining three to Urban Boys Secondary School Fegge. However, our inspection revealed that only one of the six buildings had been renovated and painted, but the interiors were yet to be completed. Some class windows and chalk boards remained uninstalled.

Despite the ongoing renovation, several challenges were evident during our visit. The primary school's buildings were not fully ready to accommodate Urban Boys Secondary School Fegge students, leaving uncertainty about the relocation timeline. Additionally, there were concerns about flooding on the premises, which could pose a threat to the wellbeing of students and disrupt regular school activities. Furthermore, the football field isn’t in shape yet, and the basketball court, though in good condition, was not appropriately situated as it encroached upon the space meant for primary school students.

The promise made by the Governor to upgrade infrastructure in government-owned schools, including the relocation of Urban Boys Secondary School Fegge, has undoubtedly raised expectations among students, teachers, and the local community. The Principal, Mr Emmanuel Anierobi, expressed his hope that the new school environment would be ready by September. However, some delays in the renovation works have been observed, likely attributed to the primary school students still being present on the premises. It is also possible that the commencement of extensive renovation work might be scheduled for the August break.

The commitment of the Governor of Anambra state to upgrade infrastructure in government-owned schools, particularly Urban Boys Secondary School Fegge, is a positive step towards improving the quality of education and learning experiences for students. By fulfilling these promises, the government can demonstrate its dedication to the betterment of education in the state and foster an environment where students can thrive academically and holistically. We rate this promise “In the Works”.
